The beach on a sunny day. There is sand dunes and blue sky.

Formby Beach

National Trust Formby is a coastal nature haven for wildlife and people.

Here you’ll discover some of Europe’s best sand dune habitats, where many rare species thrive, including Natterjack toads and sand lizards.

Rich in history, visitors can catch glimpses of the past from spotting pre-historic footprints to wandering through what was once acres of asparagus fields in the 1920s and 30s.

On sunny days the car park can fill up and close by mid-morning. Avoid the traffic and the queues, get the train, Freshfield station is only a short walk away.

On the way to Formby Beach you'll walk through Formby Pinewoods, home to the protected red squirrels.

Lots of useful information and top tips for planning your visit to Formby’s nature haven can be found on The National Trust Formby website here.

Don’t forget your beach basics - to keep us all safe and the stunning Sefton coastline looking clean and beautiful:

  • Use the bins – National Trust Formby have put more large bins at both Lifeboat Road and Victoria Road car parks and these are being emptied more frequently. If a bin is full, pop your litter in a bag, then please take it home and recycle where you can.
  • Remember BBQs & fires are not allowed anywhere at the coast.
  • Please respect this precious landscape, it is home to many rare plants and animals!

Formby is a lifeguarded beach but it's important to follow key safety advice:

  • Check tide times and only swim within the yellow and red RNLI flags
  • Be aware of soft mud. If you get into difficulty and can't see the lifeguard call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
  • If you get into trouble in the water lie on your back and relax, resisting the urge to thrash about. If possible raise your hand and shout for help.
